Large Mid-Victorian Banded Agate White Enamel Locket

Large Mid-Victorian Banded Agate White Enamel Locket

C.1869. A magnificent and large mid-Victorian banded agate and white enamel locket. The main center cabochon banded agate is carved in an oval-shape, and four additional smaller ones that are carved in a square-shape adorn each corner along with the white enameled circles. Finely crafted gold granulations sit in the enamels. The agates are at its best with the consistent banding pattern and rich contrast. The original matching bail is set with a small oval cabochon banded agate in a diamond-shaped gold frame, and it makes the whole piece more complete. This 15k gold locket displays an open-back frame, and the photo compartment remains empty with brown silk fabric in it. The glass is intact. Around the gold frame of the back, the beautifully engraved inscription reads 'Anna Maria Gulston, ob. 23rd April, 1869.'  This locket once belonged to Anna Maria Gulston, who was born as Anna Maria Knowles on September 27th, 1789 at Christchurch, Surrey, England. She married Joseph Gulston, a legislator on May 1st, 1809 at Egham, Surrey, England. They had five children: Joseph Gulston who lived less than one month (b.1810), Josepha Heath Gulston (b.1811), Horatio Robert Mayawell Gulston (b.1812), Alan James Gulston (b. December 25, 1813) and Justina Maria Stepney Gulston. (b. February 21, 1820). Anna Maria Gulston passed away in 1869 at Droitwich, Worcestershire, England. The last image shows the lovely Anna Maria.
Overall this gorgeous locket is in great condition without any damage to the stones or enamel. The gold shows the natural patina. This locket is paired with a c.1880 antique 'gas pipe' chain (shown on the model and NFS), and this listing is for the locket only.
