C.1820-1830. A magnificent and rare French early 19th century enamel set. The set consists of a 29.5 inches chain and the matched vinaigrette pendant. Both chain and the pendant are double-sided with the identical colors and patterns. The set is crafted in 18k yellow gold, and contains French ram's head hallmark (1819-1838) on the clasp of the chain and the bale of the vinaigrette. A vinaigrette was used as a miniature container with a small sponge that was saturated with perfumes or oils. Often worn over gloves, chains or chatelaines, it was carried to mask the odor of surroundings. When the sponge was soaked only in vinegar, it could also help prevent the wearer from fainting.
The main pastel color palette of this piece works beautifully with the floral pattern. The set is a fine example of French work of the Romantic Period. When the vinaigrette opens, it reveals the interior grill/pierced gold work in which the design continues with scrolls and feathers, to match the exotic bird, the main motif of the pendant. The vinaigrette opens and closes properly, including the grill part. The clasp of the chain is in good working order as well. The set looks stunning when it's on, and overall it is in great condition.
