Victorian Grand Tour Souvenir Micromosaic & ROMA Locket

Victorian Grand Tour Souvenir Micromosaic & ROMA Locket

C.1850-1870. A magnificent 19th century 'Grand Tour' souvenir 18k gold locket. The locket is double-sided. One side is adorned with intricate micromosaics of Italian flags and religious symbols, and the other side says ROMA in raised lettering with fine gold wirework around it. The locket is all in original condition, and the handsome large bale works great with a chunky chain. The ROMA panel opens, and reveals a compartment. The Vatican workshop mark of two crossed keys & a mitre are seen in two areas: on the bale and inside of the ROMA compartment. A piece like this was very popular in the mid 19th century. They were purchased by travelers, often wealthy young men on a 'Grand Tour' of Europe. 'Grand Tour' became a trend for young and sophisticated European aristocrats to visit Paris, Florence, Venice, and above all Rome to complete their classical education. These types of jewelry were acquired to take home as Victorian era 'souvenirs'. This beautiful quality locket has been preserved well without any damages.
