C.1820. A striking Georgian paste rivière necklace. This necklace is set in silver with foil-backed paste stones in graduated size. Each paste stone is clear and bright, and the foiled back enhances the light's reflection. Each stone in this necklace is slightly larger than this necklace.
Paste jewelry was admired and collected by high society devotees because of its beauty, not as imitation diamond jewelry. Today, it is still appreciated for its beauty; pieces in good condition are rare.
The necklace has a desirable ‘closed’ back setting. It also has an extension for more comfortable wearability, and contains a sterling security chain that was added many years ago. This necklace has the original paste concealed clasp, not the common replacement (a spring clasp). The push tab closure snaps correctly.
The necklace measures approximately 17” in length, and the pastes measure approximately 9mm in diameter(the largest) and graduate to the smallest measuring 6mm. The clasp paste diameter is 9mm.
