Victorian Grand Tour Souvenir Micromosaic & SALVE Locket

Victorian Grand Tour Souvenir Micromosaic & SALVE Locket

C.1850-1870. A magnificent 19th century 'Grand Tour' souvenir 18k gold locket. The locket is double-sided. One side displays a cherub motif in micromosaic, and the other side is adorned with the raised lettering that says SALVE, along with gold wirework and granulations around it. The locket is all in original condition, and the handsome large bale shows beautifully patterned gold work on it. The SALVE panel opens, and reveals a compartment. The Vatican workshop mark of two crossed keys & a mitre are seen in two areas: on the edge of the bale and inside of the SALVE compartment. A piece like this was very popular in the mid 19th century. They were purchased by travelers, often wealthy young men on a 'Grand Tour' of Europe. 'Grand Tour' became a trend for young and sophisticated European aristocrats to visit Paris, Florence, Venice, and above all Rome to complete their classical education. These types of jewelry were acquired to take home as Victorian era 'souvenirs'. We love the rare combination of 'Cherub and SALVE'. The Italian word, salve comes from the Latin salvere, meaning to be in good health or to be well. The locket opens well, and stays securely when closed. A few small tesserae (micromosaic tiles) and a small part of gold wire decoration on the salve panel are missing. Overall the locket is in very good condition considering that it is over 160 years old. The gold feels rich and warm, and shows the natural patina.
